三、fatherland是怎么回事？

很多文化里都把“祖国”比作“母亲”，所以我们常说的“祖国母亲”在英语里的表达也就顺理成章成了motherland。motherland字典里给出的解释是：the country that you were born in and that you feel a strong emotional connection with.

之所以把一些事物比作“母亲”，比如“母校”、“母亲河”等是因为这些事物有“孕育、哺育”的贡献。但其实英语里还有fatherland的说法，只不过用得很少而已。关于fatherland是怎么来的，一般认为其来源于德语中的vaterland,这里的vater=father。所以英语里的fatherland常出现在和德国有关的语境中。
