一、engage是什么意思

1. 吸引住（注意力、兴趣）

2. 雇用；聘用

eg: He was engaged as a marketing director by another company after resigning.

辞职以后，他又被另外一家公司聘用为营销总监。

3. 与…建立密切关系；尽力理解

eg: He spent two years engaging with this company.

他花了两年的时间才和这家公司建立了密切的关系。

4. 与（某人）交战；与（某人）开战

eg: The general was fearless when engaging the enemies at the frontier.

这位将军在前线与敌人交战时毫无畏惧。

5. （使）衔接，啮合

1. engage for 允诺; 保证

eg: I will engage for the profits if you agree to carry out this plan.

2. engage in 参加; 从事; 忙于

3. engage to 订婚

三、易混淆的三个词：engage, participate, take part in 

1. engage

指做某事或参与某项活动，常后接介词 in/on/upon。

eg: He didn’t want to engage in the contest, because he had no time.

他不想参加比赛，因为他没有时间。

2. participate

指参与某活动或事件，含积极、主动之意，常后接介词 in。

eg: Will you participate in the dancing party tonight?

你会参加今晚的舞会吗？

3. take part in

指参加集体性的活动。

eg: Students who took part in the debate were from different schools.

参加辩论的学生来自不同的学校。
